Fashion Design Software Reviews

When it comes to fashion design software there are many packages to choose from, so it is important to get the program that fits best with your skills and requirements.  For instance, if your focus is on accessories, you need software to help you design accessories to go with the current styles.  This is also true of other kinds of software to assist you in designing shoes, tops, bottoms or a complete ensemble.

In your search for good software programs, you should examine features that will best help you create and manage the designs you want to produce.  Your focus may be on fashion garments and accessories.  However, if your job is more on the management side of the industry you will need a different kind of software with desktop publishing tools for creating advertisements or promotional materials.  There is also software to design a runway show complete with music and lighting that compliments the current design line you are producing.

Pattern Making

Added to all this there are programs that allow you to do flat pattern drafting so that you can create pattern templates.  These types of programs allow you to produce bespoke pattern pieces rather than reusing the same old paper patterns.  You can also find software that uses textile designing features so that you can create garments and accessories through the use of fabric, colour matches, insertions and pattern repeats.  This type of software is sometimes compatible with other programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Bitmap or Vector

It is important for you to find programs that produce clear images, so you need to look for raster programs using bitmap images.  These kinds of images are ideal for creating an overall look, though enlarging a design can create jagged edges and reducing it can cause the images to lose details.  Some software uses vector graphics that do not produce jagged edges regardless of whether you are creating straight lines, geometrics or curves. The lines remain smooth even if you enlarge or reduce images in vector-based programs like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw and Macromedia Freehand.  Once you have looked at these kinds of features, you can then concentrate on the different kinds of fashion design software.

OptiTex Fashion Software

If you are a fan of the many TV fashion shows, you may have heard mention of OptiTex.  As one of the most comprehensive software programs available, this program is used both by beginners and experts.  Not only does it allow you to create a variety of patterns for different body shapes, it also has a feature that lets you create a virtual runway show.  This allows you to actually analyse how the fabric will move or behave when it is in motion during the show.

Fashion Toolbox

If you need inexpensive and educational type of software, you can also look for Fashion Toolbox.  This program has been a favourite on the market for several years with features such as TextMapper that allows you to create realistic looking photos of your designs, patterns and textures.  Its Design Essentials has storyboard capabilities and other layout tools.  However, these extra features will increase the price of the software significantly.  You may still find this expense worthwhile though, because you will be able to create your different designs and see the virtual look, before you begin the real work using your beautiful fabric.
